Generating Electricity through a Community Energy Scheme

PACE promoted its own Community Solar Energy Scheme in Manningtree, Mistley Lawford and Ardleigh in 2023 with the support of Essex County Council. We undertook a Feasibility Study which showed there was good potential for roof-top solar generation and battery storage in our area. The aim was to increase local production of solar electricity which would reduce carbon emissions from our community and support local households and businesses with cheaper electricity. We were going to introduce a Pay-for-my-own option and a Pay-as-I-save option. There was a great deal of local interest, and we had 253 expressions of interest and 54 direct enquiries. Many residents went forward with paying for their own solar panels and battery, but we could not secure the funding necessary for the Pay-as-I-save option

In 2026 PACE remains committed to find a Local Community Energy Scheme which will reduce carbon emissions and support local households and businesses with cheaper electricity. We are currently in discussion with Stour Power to see if we can promote a viable Community Energy Scheme.

What can you do?

If you have sufficient funds you can get quotes from several Solar Installers, including the Essex County Council Scheme which is called Solar Together. Typically, you need in the region of £8 to 10,000 for solar panels and battery and you could repay your capital investment within 7 to 10 years.

If you have skills in renewable energy and/or investments, you could join our PACE Community Energy Group – please Email manningtreepace@gmail.com
